1. University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations
General English Exams
- KET Key English Test
- PET Preliminary English Test
- FCE First Certificate in English
- CAE Certificate in Advanced English
- CPE Certificate of Proficiency in English
All four exams consist of tests of reading, writing, listening and speaking. You can take them in June and December. FCE and CAE can also be taken in March.
Early registration is necessary, so make sure you tell the school you want to take an exam when you apply for your course.
Professional English Exams
The Business English Certificates are a suite of three examinations
- BEC Preliminary
- BEC Vantage
- BEC Higher
They are designed to test English language ability used in the context of business. They are suitable for adults (aged 16 and over) who are either preparing for a career in business or already in work.
- ILEC - International Legal English Certificate
The International Legal English Certificate (Cambridge ILEC) assesses English language ability at Levels B2 and C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) —an internationally recognised benchmark of language ability.
- ICFE - A qualification in Financial English
This unique qualification, which has been developed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and ACCA, is designed to give students the English-language skills needed to communicate with accountancy and financial professionals and succeed in the global business arena.
Cambridge ICFE is available twice a year, in May and November. Registrations for the May 2007 session will begin in March and anyone interested in taking the exam, should contact their nearest authorised Cambridge ESOL exam centre.

Academic English
The International English Language Testing System
IELTS is recognised as an entrance requirement by British, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian universities and for secondary, vocational and training programmes.
Some Quality English schools are examination centres, but there are many other centres and your school can book your exam for you. These centres get very busy in the summer so book early.
5. TOEFL
Test of English as a Foreign Language
TOEFL is designed for students who are planning to study in the USA. This exam is taken on the computer.
6. TOEIC
Test of English for International Communication
TOEIC was started in Japan and is most widely recognised in the Far East.
